Google Penalties Do Not Apply Here

Last week, Google released an update designed to weed out sites containing little or unsubstantial content.  Many of these types of sites are produced by content farms and are designed to get traffic for long tail keywords.  While Google says that only 12% of all search results are affected by the update, you can ensure your site is not impacted by producing relevant, quality content on a regular basis.

Your Business Blog is Your Most Important Content Source

A fairly typical small business website will contain the following pages:

  • Home
  • Services
  • About
  • Contact Us

Some businesses may create multiple pages under the Services and About sections to provide more detail about what they do and who does it, but many won’t.  The site remains thin and doesn’t have much chance to appear in search results for specific keyword phrases.

On the other hand, those businesses that have a business blog associated with their site in a sub-directory (www.sitename.com/blog) or sub-domain (blog.sitename.com) have a much better opportunity of getting visibility in the search results.  With a blog, a business owner has the ability to produce fresh, timely content on a regular basis while incorporating different keyword phrases.  Google loves this kind of content and will reward you by crawling your site frequently, if you are regularly posting.  In addition, freshly published blog postings will often appear on the first page of the search results for a day or two, especially when the other results are dated.
